Sustainability Program Design and Implementation Case Example

Through our work with leading Canadian companies, Loop has developed a methodology that integrates sustainability into operations and incorporates “green DNA” into the very core of a company’s culture.

Our methodology includes the following steps:
  • Define the program areas
  • Select the performance indicators that reflect program success
  • Establish the benchmarks for each indicator
  • Set targets for each indicator
  • Implement progress measurement
  • Roll-out program: scorecard, processes and training
  • Communicate progress
  • Improve and innovate
For one client, this meant the ability to launch a national sustainability program covering energy, carbon, water, waste, green procurement, green facilities and employee and customer engagement within 12 months of starting. Within 15 months, all 8,000 employees had undergone extensive training; 40 “green” operating procedures had been adopted; and 50% of the client’s suppliers had been scored according to a green index.

Now, a further three months into implementation, this company is regularly measuring their sustainability progress and reporting to all key stakeholders. The sustainability program has become a powerful and exciting way for the company to improve its dialogue with employees and customers, and a new culture of “green innovation” has been created. Progress towards sustainability is being tracked and communicated to stakeholders using the Loop IRIS. (See below.)
